Through our podcasts around entrepreneurship and innovation, we share academic knowledge and practical experiences on various subjects with you to extend its impact. In our series ”The Innovation Tapes: Explained”, we focus on how to foster innovation within a larger organisation, while in ”Innovation Ecosystems Unpacked” we zoom in on what startups and scaleups really need from their ecosystem in order to be successful. #1. The Innovation Tapes: Explained
In this series, we clear the fog around the word ‘innovation’ by diving into the stories of people who drive the innovation culture in various organisations. Who are these people, what does driving innovation mean and what are their factors of success and struggles when it comes to innovating within large organisations? Through this podcast series, we break through the innovation jargon and explore how to innovate in a systemic, repeatable and scalable manner.
In each episode, we spark the discussion between academia, experienced practitioners and industry leaders of innovation, to discuss the reasons why organisations often face so many challenges in innovating and what they have learned to overcome these challenges.
Episode 1 - Innovation Processes
Arjan Rensma, Former Innovation Driver at DSM talks about the importance of building structured processes for innovation. Why do organisations need to develop innovation processes and why shouldn’t they let innovation roam free? What are the requirements for building such processes? During this episode, Arjan Rensma reflects on his experience at DSM and how they created strong innovation processes which allowed DSM to build the innovative culture.
Episode 2 - The Bridge Between Management & Innovation Teams
Angelique Plugge, Former Innovation Driver at ING talks about the crucial role innovation drivers play when it comes to driving the innovative culture. Why do innovation drivers need to support (senior) management and what role should management in general play when it comes to driving innovation? How can leaders recognise descriptors in the culture that are either helpful or unhelpful for innovation? During this episode, Angelique reflects on her experience from ING, as well as being a coach in our programme.
Episode 3 - Orchestrating Innovation in Public-Private Ecosystems (NL)
Frank Berkers, Senior Scientist binnen TNO, praat over het nieuwe innovatie vakgebied: Orchestrating Innovation. Wat is Orchestrating Innovation, waarom is ecosysteem samenwerking cruciaal en welke problemen komen het voor in het realiseren van Orchestrating Innovation? Het Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship en TNO lanceren daarom dan ook een innovatieprogramma, Orchestrating Innovation in Public-Private Ecosystems, waar deelnemers leren hoe een effectieve samenwerking binnen innovatie ecosystemen opgezet kan worden.
Episode 4 - Corporate Identity & Leadership for Innovation
Dr. Prof. Justin Jansen, Professor of Corporate Entrepreneurship at the Rotterdam School of Management, talks about the influence of corporate identity on innovative behaviour within organisations and the role management plays in shaping the vision / mission for such an identity. Furthermore, Justin shares his insights from his research and discusses real-life examples from Shell & CoolBlue, where the difference in corporate identity and leadership influenced the innovative culture.
Episode 5 - Innoveren binnen publieke organisaties
Gerben Bootsma, Senior Adviseur Innovatie & Mobiliteit binnen het Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Milieu vertelt hoe je binnen een publieke organisatie kan analyseren op welke innovatieprojecten je moet focussen en hoe je de innovatiekracht van de organisatie kan versterken. In de vijfde aflevering van The Innovation Tapes: Explained, gaat Gerben samen met Dr. Ferdinand Jaspers in gesprek over de uitdagingen en kansen om innovatie binnen het Ministerie organisatie-breed aan te jagen.
Episode 6 - Van idee naar innovatie
Hoe zorg je voor een effectieve samenwerking met verschillende partijen, zodat je innovatie projecten goed van de grond komen? 💡 In deze aflevering, gaat Linda Nieuwenhuizen, Senior Manager New Business & Diensten bij Centraal Beheer in gesprek met Dr. Ferdinand Jaspers over hoe je ervoor zorgt dat innovatieve ideeën binnen de organisatie draagvlak krijgen en hoe zij dat binnen Centraal Beheer heeft gedaan.
Episode 7 - Orchestrating Innovation in de praktijk
Frank Berkers (Senior Scientist binnen TNO) en Sjoerd Mentink (Program Manager Public-Private Partnerships bij Philips) bespreken hoe Orchestrating Innovation bijdraagt aan effectieve samenwerkingen binnen onder meer het MedTech ecosysteem. Hoe werkt Orchestrating innovation binnen deze sector, waarom is ecosysteem samenwerking cruciaal en welke uitdagingen komen er voort uit het realiseren van Orchestrating Innovation?
#2. Innovation Ecosystems Unpacked: What do Startups and Scaleups really need?
Recently, there has been a great deal of attention surrounding the importance of building a supportive innovation ecosystem for startups and scaleups. The latter is known in to lead to better innovation capabilities and to the creation of jobs and ventures, which in turn contribute to economic growth and resilience. But what exactly are “innovation ecosystems”? And how do you make sure you address the right needs when building your local ecosystem? Find out in our podcast series, featuring a diverse group of innovation ecosystem experts and entrepreneurs and moderated by Martin Luxemburg.
Episode 1 - Innovation Ecosystems
In this 1st episode, we start unpacking the functioning of innovation ecosystems for startups and scaleups. Our Director Martin Luxemburg does this by engaging in an open discussion with Rogier Thewessen, co-founder of YoungCapital and Prof. Dr. Justin Jansen, Corporate Entrepreneurship Professor at RSM (EUR) and Academic Director of Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship. Do innovation ecosystems exist as such? Or are they just an expression of the organisations and the individuals operating in it? We unpack the effects of these interactions in this intro episode to find out what’s specific about them.
Episode 2 - Access to Capital
The 2nd episode dives into the funding landscape within innovation ecosystems for startups and scaleups. This time Rinke Zonneveld, Executive Director of InnovationQuarter, and Gianluca Valentini, VP Marketplace Operations at HousingAnywhere | Venture Advisor at EQT Ventures | Founding Partner of Great Stuff Ventures, join Martin Luxemburg in a fascinating discussion about the importance of access to capital. How should startups and scaleups navigate through the complex capital landscape, with different types of (international) investment and myriads of stakeholders each playing a different (supportive) role?
Episode 3 - Access to Market
Access to market is one of the determining factors driving the success of an innovation ecosystem. Without knowing the right way to acquire (potential) customers and partners, startups and scaleups cannot grow and create impact. In this episode, Martin Luxemburg engages in a critical discussion with Maarten Bosch, CEO Mosa Meat, and Jonathan Teoh, Entrepreneurship at Foodvalley NL. Together, they uncover the secrets of go-to-market strategies by focusing specifically on the AgriFood sector.
Episode 4 - Internationalisation
At some point in a startup’s growth trajectory, scaling up often means going international. But how should startups leverage their innovation ecosystem to successfully expand internationally? Which international markets should they consider? Is there a difference when scaling to China, the US or within Europe? What is an optimal international growth strategy? In this episode, together with internationalisation experts and founders of weGrow, Gernot Schwendtner and Florent Coudyser, Martin Luxemburg unpacks the key factors to consider when scaling internationally.
Episode 5 - Knowledge-Intensive Startups
Knowledge-intensive startups are considered to be key drivers of innovation and have an enormous impact on society. However, they face a unique and complex set of challenges in their growth trajectory. But what are knowledge-intensive startups exactly and how can they scale up in such a challenging and complex landscape? In the fifth episode of our podcast series ”Innovation Ecosystems Unpacked”, find out more about the innovation ecosystem surrounding knowledge-intensive startups and scaleups during an engaging conversation between Chris Eveleens (advisor at AWTI) and Cinzia Silvestri (founder and CEO of Bi/ond), moderated by our director Martin Luxemburg.
